Pharrell is a name that no one was expecting, yet it made so much sense after they announced it…
Without going too much into the matter of young designers waiting for a job like this (which I find questionable in this exact case), why was Pharrell the one and only? And how did that sound obvious after all?
To start, we can stop trying to compare anyone with Abloh because no one who came to that seat after him would be trying to replace him. He was one of a kind, and I actually believe that Virgil was one of the most important figures in fashion history, and those inside the industry know it even better than us.
The role now is “how can we continue this legacy that he gave us, without going down the same path every season?” Or even how could they not make Louis Vuitton a totally different brand than it was in those last years?
The answer, I believe, is to find someone with a similar vision and, even better, some sort of relationship with Abloh. Someone who would understand and be a part of his movements through these years, someone with strong cultural expression.
Pharrell is one of the most influential people in the culture industry these days. He is an insider with a face, and not many people like this can be found.
And with that said, yesterday he gave us proof. This collection was not trying to be new; it is a show of legacy, a presentation of how everything that was done became so undeniably unique that we can think of no other brand/name to refer to.
The show was an actual show as we may say that, the choir, the bridge as a catwalk, the number of important artists and figures on the front row, and more gave this collection an air of something great that we were expecting. Everyone who knows LV’s icons can spot them right at the moment they hit the catwalk.
This Men’s Spring Summer Collection 2024 was a tribute to everything Virgil opened the doors of, a tribute to black culture, and how incredible it is that one of the most traditional French fashion houses became a place of black heritage after him.

We received everything that LV does best, the youthful side of the brand that we already saw for the last years. The pop culture icons and everything we can think we’re tired of seeing, but Pharrell gave it a new breath.
So yes, I think he was one great choice.
